Tōrei Enji
Tōrei Enji served as the primary disciple of Hakuin Ekaku, the monk who revitalised Rinzai Zen in Japan. While Hakuin is the subject of many historical accounts, Tōrei provided the systematic structure for these teachings. He authored the 'Shumon Mujintō', a text that organised Zen training methods for future generations. His daily life followed the principle of 'buji', meaning a lack of affectation or artificial planning. He believed that a person acts naturally without seeking answers outside of their own nature.

His calligraphy reflects this philosophy through a lack of calculated artifice. Tōrei often utilised long-bristled brushes that held a large volume of ink. This technique created 'nijimi', a soft blurring effect where the ink bleeds into the paper. He frequently worked in 'sosho' and 'gyosho' styles, which are cursive and semi-cursive scripts. These flowing forms avoid the rigid constraints of standard block printing. His brushwork prioritises the movement of the spirit over technical perfection.
Modern collectors value Tōrei Enji for the directness of his visual language. His work embodies the Zen concept of 'Hon Rai Mu Ichi Butsu', or the idea that all things return to nothingness. This focus on simplicity and the removal of worldly distractions suits contemporary minimalist interiors. The ink tones and spontaneous marks provide a sense of calm.
