Vanessa Bell
In 1916, Vanessa Bell relocated to Charleston, an eighteenth-century Sussex farmhouse that became a centre for her creative practice. This move followed a period of significant personal change, including the death of her parents and her subsequent relocation from Westminster to the Bloomsbury district of London with her siblings.

Biography
Following the death of her brother Thoby in 1906, Bell married the art critic Clive Bell. The couple raised two sons, Julian and Quentin, while participating in the Bloomsbury Group. This collective included figures such as Virginia Woolf, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, and the painter Duncan Grant.
The 1910 exhibition Manet and the Post-Impressionists, organised by Roger Fry, altered the direction of Bell's work. Influenced by this encounter with new European movements, she adopted brighter colours and simplified, abstracted forms in her painting.
