About

The Detroit Institute of Arts holds a substantial collection of art from around the world. Founded as the Detroit Museum of Art, it took its current name in 1919. Early acquisitions included 17th- and 18th-century Italian paintings, largely built by donors and staff with a special interest in the Baroque period. Today, the museum's encyclopaedic collection includes work by American, European, and non-Western artists. Its holdings of modern art are especially noteworthy, with significant works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Roy Lichtenstein.
