A refined woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui, showcasing a portrait of a woman in the traditional bijin-ga style of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui captures a refined subject in the classic bijin-ga style, a genre of Japanese art focused on the depiction of beautiful women. Eisui, an active member of the Utagawa school during the late eighteenth century, produced works that often featured elegant figures set against neutral backgrounds, allowing the viewer to focus on the subject's posture and attire.
The composition is a close-up portrait, emphasising the subject's facial features and the elaborate styling of her hair. She is adorned with multiple hairpins, which indicate her status and the fashion of the period. Her hands are positioned near her face, interacting with a floral element, likely a narcissus or similar bulbous plant. The lines are clean and precise, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the Edo period, where the artist worked in collaboration with carvers and printers to achieve the final image.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of peach, muted blue-green, and black ink. This choice of colour directs attention to the subtle expressions and the graphic quality of the lines. The figure's kimono features a subtle pattern, adding texture without overwhelming the composition. Such prints were popular among the urban population of Edo, serving as both fashion plates and artistic collectables. This work demonstrates the technical skill involved in traditional Japanese printmaking, where the economy of line and the balance of negative space create a sense of poise. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus is on the representation of grace and the fleeting nature of contemporary fashion.
