A moody, atmospheric depiction of the Sussex countryside, featuring a vast, cloud-filled sky and a distant windmill.
James Webb was a prolific British painter known for his atmospheric depictions of the English countryside and coastal regions. In this work, he captures the expansive, moody skies characteristic of the Sussex region. The composition is dominated by a heavy, cloud-filled sky that occupies the majority of the canvas, creating a sense of scale against the low-lying terrain below. The light breaks through the clouds in muted tones, illuminating parts of the marshy ground and the distant horizon.
To the right, a small windmill sits upon a rise, providing a sense of human presence within the vast, open environment. The foreground is rendered with darker, earthy pigments, suggesting damp soil and vegetation. Webb employs a technique that prioritises the movement of light and shadow, a common trait in his later works which often drew inspiration from the traditions of Dutch marine painting and the earlier British masters. The brushwork is fluid, allowing for the soft transitions between the heavy, rain-laden clouds and the clearer patches of sky. This piece reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the natural world, focusing on the transient conditions of weather rather than static topographical detail. The inclusion of a small cart and figures near the windmill adds a subtle narrative element, grounding the scene in the daily life of the rural south of England. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, capturing a specific moment in the changing light of a Sussex day.
