A serene coastal scene by Maxime Maufra, capturing a traditional thatched cottage overlooking the bay of Douarnenez in Brittany.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, frequently turned his attention to the rugged coastlines of Brittany. This work depicts a traditional cottage in Douarnenez, a town that attracted many artists during the late nineteenth century due to its maritime character and preserved vernacular architecture. The composition balances the solid, earthy mass of the thatched dwelling against the expansive, atmospheric view of the bay.
Maufra employs a technique that reflects the influence of the Pont-Aven circle, particularly the interest in simplified forms and expressive brushwork. The trees in the foreground frame the scene, their branches rendered with rhythmic, gestural strokes that contrast with the static nature of the stone cottage. The palette remains grounded in natural tones: ochre for the thatch, muted greys for the stone walls, and soft blues for the water. A clothesline strung between the trees adds a domestic detail, grounding the scene in the daily life of the region.
Unlike the strict optical theories of earlier Impressionists, Maufra prioritises the mood of the location. The light is diffused, suggesting an overcast day common to the Atlantic coast. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible texture that gives the surface a tactile quality. By focusing on the intersection of rural life and the sea, Maufra captures a specific sense of place. This print reproduces the tonal variations and the specific painterly marks of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the foreground foliage and the distant horizon line.
