A woodblock print from the 1747 publication 'Fūryū kasen ehon waka no ura' by Takagi Sadatake, depicting figures from the Japanese poetic tradition.
This woodblock print originates from the 1747 publication 'Fūryū kasen ehon waka no ura', authored by Takagi Sadatake. The work belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. It depicts figures associated with the classical Japanese poetic tradition, presented in a style that blends historical reverence with contemporary fashion of the mid-eighteenth century.
The composition is divided across two pages, a common format for Japanese illustrated books of this era. On the left, a male figure in traditional court attire is shown in a contemplative posture. On the right, two female figures are seated, their garments decorated with patterns that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the time. The lines are precise and clean, characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques used for mass-produced literature and art books. The inclusion of calligraphic text integrates the visual narrative with the literary content, as the work serves as a guide to the 'Immortals of Poetry' (Kasen).
Takagi Sadatake was active during the mid-Edo period. His work often focused on the intersection of classical themes and popular culture. This specific print demonstrates the technical skill required to balance text and image within a limited space. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and the decorative qualities of their clothing, rather than anatomical realism. The background elements, such as the architectural lines and the suggestion of a view beyond the interior, provide a sense of place without distracting from the primary subjects. This print offers a glimpse into the literary and visual culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the study of classical poetry remained a popular pursuit among the urban population.
