Description

A striking example of Belgian Realism, this 1875 painting depicts the social divide between affluent party-goers and labourers at dawn.

Charles Hermans, a Belgian painter associated with the Realist movement, produced this large-scale work in 1875. The composition captures a stark social contrast at the break of day. A group of affluent party-goers, dressed in evening attire, emerges from a building, while a group of labourers and working-class individuals stands nearby, observing the scene. The juxtaposition of the fine fabrics and top hats against the worn, practical clothing of the workers creates a narrative of class disparity common in late nineteenth-century European urban life. Hermans employs a controlled, academic technique to render the textures of the clothing and the expressions of the figures. The light, characteristic of early morning, illuminates the faces of the revellers, who appear somewhat detached from the reality of the workers waiting to begin their day. The painting avoids overt moralising, preferring to present the scene as a direct observation of contemporary society. The discarded bouquet on the pavement serves as a subtle detail, suggesting the end of a long night of celebration. This work is representative of the shift in Belgian art during the 1870s, where artists moved away from historical or mythological subjects to focus on the immediate environment. Hermans was known for his ability to handle complex group compositions, and here he manages the interaction between the two distinct social groups with precision. The painting remains a document of the social tensions present in Brussels during the period, reflecting the divide between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The attention to detail, from the folds of the silk dresses to the heavy boots of the labourers, demonstrates the artist's commitment to a truthful representation of his surroundings.
