A refined steel engraving by Jean Marie Leroux, reproducing a classic portrait of a Spanish lady originally attributed to Diego Velázquez.
This steel engraving by Jean Marie Leroux reproduces the famous portrait of a woman often attributed to Diego Velázquez. Leroux, a French engraver active during the nineteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the original oil painting into the medium of print. The work captures the subject in a three-quarter view, draped in a dark shawl that frames her face and shoulders. She holds a folding fan in her right hand, while her left hand rests near her bodice, adorned with a rosary or decorative chain.
The engraving technique relies on a system of fine lines and cross-hatching to render the textures of the fabric, the softness of the skin, and the play of light across the figure. The background remains dark and relatively plain, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's expression and posture. This print reflects the nineteenth-century practice of disseminating the works of Old Masters through high-quality reproductive engravings, allowing broader audiences to engage with European art history.
Leroux was known for his ability to maintain the tonal range of the original compositions he reproduced. The contrast between the light skin tones and the deep shadows of the clothing creates a sense of volume and presence. The print includes the title and attribution to both the engraver and the original painter at the base of the image, consistent with the conventions of nineteenth-century print publishing. This piece is a representative example of the skill required to translate painterly brushwork into the structured, linear language of the engraver's burin.
