A modernist study of a young tree by Emily Carr, featuring fluid, rhythmic brushwork and a deep, earthy colour palette.
Emily Carr, a central figure in Canadian modernism, produced this work during a period when her focus shifted toward the rhythmic, spiritual qualities of the British Columbian forest. In this composition, the artist moves away from literal representation, choosing instead to interpret the organic form of a young tree through a lens of fluid, sculptural movement. The trunk and foliage are rendered with sweeping, rhythmic brushwork that suggests a sense of growth and vitality, rather than static observation.
Carr often utilised a palette of deep, earthy tones, and here she employs a range of greens and dark shadows to create a sense of depth within the forest floor. The light appears to emanate from within the subject itself, catching the curves of the foliage and the texture of the bark. Her technique involves a deliberate simplification of form, where the tree becomes a series of interlocking shapes that guide the viewer's eye across the canvas. This approach reflects her interest in the work of the Group of Seven, yet maintains a distinct personal style that prioritises the emotional resonance of the natural world.
The composition is tightly cropped, focusing on the immediate presence of the tree. By removing the horizon line and the broader context of the woods, Carr forces an intimate encounter with the subject. The paint application is thick and deliberate, showing the physical labour involved in her process. This work captures the artist's ability to transform a common forest element into a singular, expressive entity, demonstrating her mastery of form and her deep connection to the environment of the Pacific Northwest.
