Description

A refined 1782 portrait by John Singleton Copley, depicting Abigael Bromfield Rogers in a white silk gown against a dramatic sunset.

Painted in 1782, this portrait depicts Abigael Bromfield Rogers, a member of a prominent Boston family. John Singleton Copley executed this work during his London period, after he had relocated from the American colonies to establish himself within the British art scene. The composition reflects the influence of the Grand Manner style, which was popular among the British elite at the time. Abigael is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing a white silk gown and a large hat adorned with feathers. Her attire and the dramatic, swirling sky behind her suggest a romanticised approach to portraiture. Copley demonstrates his technical skill in the rendering of the fabric, particularly the way the light catches the folds of the silk. The inclusion of a landscape background, featuring a sunset over distant hills, adds a sense of atmosphere to the scene. This work is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It captures the fashion of the late eighteenth century, with the subject's elaborate headwear and refined posture. Copley moved away from the more rigid, linear style of his earlier American portraits, adopting a looser brushwork and a more fluid approach to composition. The painting remains a clear example of his transition into the European tradition of portraiture, where he sought to compete with the leading painters of his day. The subject, Abigael, was the wife of Daniel Denison Rogers, a merchant who had also moved to London. The portrait serves as a record of their social standing and their connection to the transatlantic world of the late eighteenth century.
