A dramatic seventeenth-century oil painting by Nicolaes Maes, depicting the biblical departure of Hagar and Ishmael through masterful use of light and shadow.
Nicolaes Maes, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this work during his early period in Amsterdam. The painting depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis, where Abraham sends Hagar and their son Ishmael away into the wilderness. Maes focuses on the emotional weight of the departure, using a dramatic chiaroscuro technique that reflects his training in the Rembrandt studio. The figures are positioned on a stone threshold, creating a clear separation between the domestic interior and the uncertain exterior world.
Abraham stands centrally, his hand extended in a gesture of dismissal. He wears a heavy, deep red robe that contrasts with the muted tones of the background. Hagar, positioned to the right, appears downcast, her posture conveying resignation as she prepares to leave. Ishmael, equipped with a bow and arrow, stands slightly behind, looking towards the path ahead. A small dog at the bottom left adds a touch of domestic realism, a common feature in Dutch genre and history paintings of the seventeenth century. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the faces and hands of the figures, heightening the sense of psychological tension.
Maes demonstrates a sophisticated handling of texture, particularly in the fabric of the garments and the weathered stone of the doorway. The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the architecture grounding the figures. Unlike his later, more polished portraiture, this work retains the earthy, painterly quality characteristic of his early religious subjects. The scene avoids excessive theatricality, opting instead for a quiet, humanised interpretation of a well-known story. This print captures the subtle gradations of light and shadow, preserving the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting.
