Mattia Preti, a Calabrian painter active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates his mastery of the tenebrist tradition in this depiction of Absalom's Feast. The narrative, drawn from the Second Book of Samuel, captures the moment of tension during the banquet where Absalom commands his servants to murder his half-brother, Amnon. Preti organises the composition around a crowded table, using the dramatic interplay of light and shadow to direct the viewer's focus across the chaotic gathering. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their gestures and expressions conveying the sudden shift from celebration to violence. Preti employs a palette dominated by deep earth tones, punctuated by the warm, saturated reds of the garments worn by the central figures.
