A stark, expressive ink drawing by Dutch CoBrA artist Lucebert, capturing a sense of movement and tension through minimalist, distorted figures.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he was associated with the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This work, titled Achtervolging, demonstrates his characteristic approach to line and form.
The composition features two figures rendered in a stark, minimalist style. The ink lines are fluid and direct, capturing a sense of urgency that aligns with the title, which translates to 'Pursuit'. The figures possess distorted, almost grotesque features, a common trait in Lucebert's visual output. He often utilised such imagery to explore human vulnerability and the absurdity of existence. The sparse use of ink, punctuated by scattered dots and splatters, creates a tension between the figures and the empty space of the paper.
Lucebert's work often bridges the gap between his literary and visual practices. His drawings frequently function as extensions of his poetry, employing a similar economy of language and raw emotional honesty. The date, 27 November 1964, is inscribed in the upper right corner, typical of his practice of documenting his creative process. This piece offers a clear view into his method of working, where the immediacy of the ink stroke takes precedence over polished finish. The lack of background detail forces the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the two subjects, heightening the sense of unease and motion inherent in the scene.
