A striking woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei featuring the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō 4th in a dramatic, character-focused portrait.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirō 4th in a dramatic pose. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which captured the intensity of the stage. The artist focuses on the actor's facial expression, using the bold, exaggerated lines characteristic of the Katsukawa school to convey the character's emotional state.
The composition is a vertical format, typical of the period, which allows for a close-up view of the actor. The figure is dressed in elaborate costume, with patterned fabric and armour details rendered through precise line work. The fan-shaped cartouche at the top contains the actor's name and house name, Yamato-ya, providing context for the viewer. The stark contrast between the white of the face and the dark, bold lines of the hair and costume creates a visual tension that draws the eye to the actor's gaze.
Shun'ei's approach to portraiture avoids unnecessary background detail, ensuring the focus remains entirely on the performer. The print reflects the culture of the Edo period, where kabuki actors were celebrities and their likenesses were highly sought after by the public. This work demonstrates the technical skill involved in woodblock printing, from the initial drawing to the carving of the blocks. The clean lines and balanced composition are typical of the artist's mature style, which prioritised clarity and impact over decorative excess. This print offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of 18th-century Japan, capturing a moment of performance with directness and technical precision.
