A refined woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon III in his role as the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon.
This woodblock print by Shunkōsai Hokushū depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon III, also known by his stage name Shikan, in the role of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. The work belongs to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which flourished in the Osaka region during the early nineteenth century. Hokushū was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school, known for his focus on the individual characteristics and psychological intensity of performers.
The composition is a close-up portrait, or ōkubi-e, which allows the viewer to focus on the actor's facial expression and theatrical makeup. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the refined carving techniques employed by Osaka printmakers of the period. The actor is shown in a moment of dramatic tension, his gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting an internal conflict or a reaction to an off-stage event. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print provides context, likely referencing the specific play or the actor's performance history.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on a warm, neutral background to allow the black ink of the actor's robes and hair to dominate. Subtle touches of red in the garment pattern and the actor's lips provide a necessary visual balance. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Kamigata artists, who often produced works for a discerning audience of theatre enthusiasts. By capturing the specific likeness of Nakamura Utaemon III, Hokushū provides a record of a fleeting performance, preserving the actor's presence for his contemporaries and later collectors. The work is a clear example of the stylistic differences between the Osaka and Edo schools of printmaking, with the former often favouring a more naturalistic approach to portraiture.
