An early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting a kabuki actor in the role of a high-ranking courtesan.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts the kabuki actor Tomizawa Montarō in the role of an oiran, or high-ranking courtesan. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre, operating as both an artist and a publisher in Edo. His work often focused on the theatre and the pleasure districts, capturing the fashion and theatrical personas of the era.
The print exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of early eighteenth-century Japanese prints. The figure is rendered with bold, confident outlines that define the posture and the elaborate folds of the kimono. The composition is flat, typical of the period before the full development of complex perspective in printmaking. The artist employs a limited palette, using hand-applied yellow tones to provide warmth against the stark black ink lines. The subject wears a kimono decorated with botanical motifs, including bamboo, which adds a layer of visual texture to the garment.
Masanobu is credited with various technical innovations in the print medium, including the use of lacquer-like black ink and the refinement of the pillar print format. This specific work demonstrates his ability to balance the stylised nature of kabuki performance with the decorative requirements of the print market. The actor is shown in a graceful, slightly swaying pose, a common convention for representing female characters played by men. The cartouche in the upper right identifies the actor, while the seal at the base provides information regarding the artist and the publisher. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Edo period, where the lines between theatrical performance and daily fashion were frequently blurred.
