A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts a narrative sequence from the Book of Genesis. The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, where multiple temporal moments are presented within a single frame. In the foreground, Adam and Eve are shown in a state of shame, concealing their bodies behind foliage as they encounter the divine presence. The figure of God, rendered with a radiant halo, stands to the right, while a bear occupies the lower corner, adding a curious element of natural history to the biblical scene. In the background, a smaller, secondary grouping shows the figures again, reinforcing the narrative progression of the fall and subsequent divine judgment.
Sadeler was a member of a prolific family of engravers based in Antwerp, known for their technical precision and their role in disseminating religious and mythological imagery across Europe. The print exhibits the characteristic cross-hatching and fine line work typical of the period, which provides volume to the figures and texture to the surrounding environment. The application of hand-colouring, likely added after the initial printing, softens the starkness of the black ink, introducing a palette of muted greens, browns, and deep purples. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image serves to identify the specific biblical passage, a common practice in devotional prints of the era intended for both scholarly and lay audiences. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the late Renaissance, where theological themes were frequently interpreted through the lens of classical humanism and meticulous draftsmanship.
