A detailed study of a nineteenth-century leather and brass photograph album, designed for storing cartes-de-visite and cabinet cards.
This object is a nineteenth-century photograph album, designed to house the popular formats of the era: the carte-de-visite and the larger cabinet card. The exterior features a dark, cross-hatched leather binding, typical of the period, which provided durability for a collection intended for frequent viewing. The inclusion of brass corner guards and a central clasp indicates a high level of craftsmanship, intended to protect the contents while adding a decorative element to the object.
During the late Victorian era, the collection of portrait photographs became a common social practice. Families and individuals curated these albums to document their social circles, military associations, and personal histories. The specific focus on military personnel suggests this album belonged to a family with connections to the armed forces or perhaps a collector interested in the evolution of military uniforms and rank insignia during the late nineteenth century.
The texture of the leather shows signs of wear, which provides evidence of its history as a functional object handled by many hands. The brass hardware, while tarnished by time, retains its structural integrity. Such albums are primary sources for historians, as they often contain handwritten inscriptions identifying the subjects, the photographers, and the dates of the sittings. This print captures the tactile quality of the original object, focusing on the material composition of the binding and the hardware. It is a study of nineteenth-century archival practices and the material culture of photography before the advent of the snapshot camera. The object reflects the Victorian preference for ornate, tactile storage solutions for personal records, bridging the gap between functional utility and aesthetic presentation.
