Painted around 1531, this work by Antonio da Correggio forms part of a pair of allegorical canvases commissioned for Isabella d'Este, the Marchesa of Mantua. At the centre, a seated woman, often identified as Virtue, is surrounded by various attributes and attendants. She holds a globe and a helmet, symbols of worldly governance and protection, while a winged figure above crowns her with a laurel wreath. To her left, a figure rests beside a lion, representing Fortitude, while other figures engage with instruments of measurement and celestial observation.
