A monochrome woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicting a couple sharing a quiet moment of leisure in Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a scene of leisure within the floating world of Edo-period Japan. The composition features a man and a woman seated on a bench, engaged in the shared activity of smoking from long pipes. Between them sits a small tray with refreshments, suggesting a moment of quiet intimacy. To the right, a third figure, likely an attendant or servant, carries a box on their back, providing a sense of narrative context to the domestic setting.
Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre. He is credited with technical innovations in printmaking, including the use of lacquer to create glossy black areas and the experimentation with perspective. This work displays the characteristic clean lines and balanced composition associated with his early to mid-career output. The figures are rendered with a focus on the patterns of their kimono, which feature floral motifs and geometric grids. These details reflect the fashion and aesthetic sensibilities of the urban merchant class during the eighteenth century.
The print is executed in a monochrome style, relying on the precision of the carved line to define form and texture. The absence of colour allows the viewer to focus on the posture of the subjects and the arrangement of the space. The artist employs a flat perspective, typical of the period, which prioritises decorative clarity over three-dimensional realism. This print offers a glimpse into the social customs and daily life of the era, capturing a fleeting interaction with economy and grace. It remains a representative example of the early Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus shifted from historical or religious subjects to the contemporary life of the city.
