A stark etching by Maxime Lalanne documenting the structural damage to a Parisian barracks during the Franco-Prussian War.
Maxime Lalanne, a draughtsman and etcher, produced this work during the Franco-Prussian War. The etching depicts the damage sustained by the Poste Caserne du Bastion 65 in Paris. Lalanne documents the structural ruin with a clinical, detached precision. The building, once a functional military barracks, stands hollowed out by artillery fire. The facade is pockmarked with dark, irregular voids where shells have breached the masonry.
Lalanne employs a refined etching technique to convey the texture of crumbling stone and debris. The foreground is rendered with quick, decisive strokes that suggest the uneven terrain of a war-torn site. A lone figure stands near the base of the structure, providing a sense of scale that emphasises the isolation of the ruined building against the open, desolate space. The composition is stark, focusing entirely on the physical reality of the destruction without romanticising the scene.
This print belongs to a series of observations made by Lalanne during the Siege of Paris. His work provides a visual record of the city under duress, capturing the immediate aftermath of military conflict. The etching avoids dramatic flourishes, relying instead on the clarity of line and the stark contrast between the ruined architecture and the surrounding void. It functions as a historical document of the period, reflecting the impact of modern warfare on urban infrastructure. The print was published by Cadart and Luce, a firm known for supporting the etching revival in France during the nineteenth century. The work remains a clear example of Lalanne's ability to translate the grim reality of a besieged city into a controlled, monochromatic medium.
