A haunting etching from Max Klinger's 1881 series A Glove, depicting a surreal, nightmarish scene of psychological obsession.
Anxieties is the seventh plate from the celebrated cycle A Glove, produced by Max Klinger in 1881. This series follows the protagonist's obsession with a lost glove, a narrative that shifts from mundane reality into the realm of the subconscious. In this specific etching, Klinger depicts a nightmarish scene where the dreamer is confronted by his own internal fears. The composition is dominated by a giant, disembodied glove that looms over the bed, acting as a physical manifestation of the subject's fixation.
Klinger employs a precise, academic etching technique to render the chaotic, dream-like atmosphere. The figures surrounding the bed appear as grotesque projections, their forms blending into the shadows and the bedclothes. The use of light and dark creates a sense of unease, typical of Klinger's contribution to Symbolist art. By placing the glove in a position of authority over the sleeping figure, the artist explores themes of fetishism, psychological torment, and the fragility of the human psyche.
This work demonstrates Klinger's technical mastery of the print medium. He uses varied line weights and cross-hatching to build volume and texture, particularly in the rendering of the bedding and the distorted figures. The print serves as a precursor to the later explorations of the unconscious by the Surrealists, who admired Klinger's ability to imbue everyday objects with irrational, emotional weight. The narrative structure of the series, which functions like a visual novel, allows the viewer to engage with the psychological progression of the protagonist. This print remains a significant example of late nineteenth-century German graphic art, reflecting a shift away from traditional realism toward the exploration of internal, subjective experiences.
