A delicate nineteenth-century etching by Adrian Ludwig Richter depicting a farmer sowing seeds, accompanied by a vignette of domestic life.
This etching by Adrian Ludwig Richter, titled Aussaat (Sowing), captures a quiet moment of rural life typical of the Biedermeier period. Richter, a central figure in German Romanticism and illustration, often focused on the harmony between humanity and the natural world. The composition depicts a farmer scattering seeds across a field, while his family observes from behind a wooden fence. A small wayside shrine, a common feature in the German countryside, anchors the scene, providing a sense of spiritual continuity to the daily labour of agriculture.
Richter employs a precise, delicate line quality that defines the forms of the figures and the surrounding environment. The scene is balanced and orderly, reflecting the period's preference for domestic stability and the idealisation of agrarian life. The inclusion of a sack marked with the artist's initials, L.R., serves as a subtle signature within the narrative space. Below the main image, a smaller vignette shows a mother nursing her child, reinforcing the themes of growth, nurture, and the cycle of life that underpin the primary image. The text accompanying the print, written in Alemannic dialect, further connects the visual narrative to the cultural and linguistic traditions of the region.
As a master of wood engraving and etching, Richter produced numerous illustrations that became staples of German households during the nineteenth century. His work is characterised by a clarity of form and a gentle, observational approach to his subjects. This print offers a glimpse into the values of the era, where the simple, repetitive tasks of the farm were viewed with reverence. The print is presented here with its original typographic elements, preserving the historical context of its publication as a page from a larger collection or book.
