A modernist interpretation of an autumn forest, featuring bold brushwork and a high-contrast palette of golden yellows and deep, earthy browns.
Prudence Heward, a member of the Beaver Hall Group, produced this work during a period when Canadian painters sought to interpret the natural environment through a modernist lens. The composition avoids traditional realism, opting instead for a subjective response to the changing seasons. Heward employs bold, rhythmic brushwork to define the undulating terrain and the skeletal forms of the trees.
The colour palette is dominated by high-contrast tones, specifically the golden yellows of the foliage against the deep, earthy browns of the undergrowth. The sky is rendered with swift, gestural strokes, suggesting a cool, overcast day. Heward focuses on the structural qualities of the woods, using dark outlines to separate the foreground from the background. This technique flattens the pictorial space, drawing attention to the surface of the canvas and the physical application of paint.
Unlike the more serene depictions of the Canadian wilderness produced by the Group of Seven, Heward’s approach here is more personal and emotive. The trees appear almost anthropomorphic, their twisted branches reaching across the frame. The ground is treated as a series of soft, rolling mounds, which provides a sense of movement that contrasts with the verticality of the trunks. This print captures the raw, unrefined energy of Heward’s style, which often prioritised psychological weight over descriptive accuracy. It is a study in how colour and form can convey the atmosphere of a specific time of year without relying on fine detail or photographic precision.
