Hokushū was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which operated in the Osaka and Kyoto regions. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on idealised beauty, Kamigata artists frequently prioritised the specific likenesses of actors, capturing their individual facial features and expressions with precision.
