Description
Henri Matisse's "Bathers by a River", painted between 1909 and 1916, presents a semi-abstract composition of female figures in a simplified landscape, reflecting the artist's engagement with Cubism and his distinctive use of colour and form.
Henri Matisse's "Bathers by a River" is a large-scale oil painting that occupied the artist for nearly seven years. Begun in 1909, the work underwent significant revisions before its completion in 1916 or 1917. The painting features four female figures arranged vertically across the canvas, set against a background divided into panels of green, black, and white. These panels create a simplified, almost abstract setting, hinting at foliage and open space. The figures themselves are rendered in a semi-abstract style, with simplified forms and muted colours. Matisse employed a limited palette, focusing on greys, greens, and blacks, with touches of pink and blue to define the figures. Originally conceived as a more traditional pastoral scene, Matisse gradually reduced the level of detail and naturalism, moving towards a more geometric and planar composition. This shift reflects the influence of Cubism, which Matisse encountered during this period. The painting's surface is characterised by visible brushstrokes and a sense of deliberate construction, revealing the artist's process of layering and revising. The stark contrasts between the figures and the background, along with the simplified forms, contribute to the painting's powerful and somewhat unsettling presence. The work is now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
