A dense, highly textured work by Pavel Filonov, showcasing his unique Analytical Art method through a fragmented, organic depiction of a wolf cub.
Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach prioritised the organic growth of a painting from the smallest detail to the whole, rather than the traditional application of form. In Beast (Wolf Cub), this philosophy is evident in the dense, cellular structure of the composition. The surface appears to be constructed from thousands of individual brushstrokes, each functioning as a discrete unit of energy.
The subject, a wolf cub, is nearly subsumed by the surrounding environment. Filonov rejects the separation between figure and background, opting instead for a unified field where the animal and its habitat share the same molecular texture. The colour palette is aggressive and saturated, utilising high-contrast reds, blues, and yellows to create a sense of constant motion. This technique mimics the biological processes of growth and decay, reflecting Filonov's interest in the hidden forces of nature.
Unlike his contemporaries who focused on geometric abstraction, Filonov maintained a commitment to the figurative, albeit in a highly fragmented state. The work demands close inspection, as the eye is forced to navigate the chaotic accumulation of marks. By building the image through this additive process, Filonov sought to reveal the internal reality of his subjects. The resulting image is less a representation of a wolf and more a visual map of its existence within a volatile, shifting world. This print captures the granular detail of the original oil painting, allowing for an examination of the artist's meticulous, labour-intensive technique.
