The scene captures the moment Saint Benedict confronts the Ostrogothic King Totila, who attempted to deceive the saint by dressing a courtier in royal attire to test his spiritual insight.

The central figure of the kneeling courtier, dressed in ornate armour, acts as the bridge between the monastic group and the king's retinue.
