A serene watercolour by Matthijs Maris depicting a quiet woodland path beside a small waterfall, rendered in the soft, atmospheric style of the Hague School.
Matthijs Maris, a member of the influential Hague School, produced this watercolour during a period when his work moved away from the strict realism of his contemporaries. While his brothers Jacob and Willem focused on the atmospheric depiction of the Dutch countryside, Matthijs often infused his compositions with a dreamlike, almost melancholic quality. This particular piece, titled Boslandschap met watervalletje, captures a quiet, secluded woodland scene.
The composition is anchored by a central cluster of mature trees, their foliage rendered with soft, layered washes that suggest the density of a forest canopy. To the left, a gnarled, leafless tree provides a stark contrast to the lush greenery, adding a sense of age and natural decay to the scene. A small stream flows over rocks in the foreground, creating a gentle waterfall that draws the eye into the depth of the woods. Two small figures walk along a path, their presence providing a sense of scale and human narrative within the vastness of the natural environment.
The palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, mossy greens, and soft greys to convey the damp, cool atmosphere of a forest. Maris employs a delicate touch with the brush, allowing the paper to show through in areas of light, which creates a luminous quality typical of his watercolour technique. Unlike his later, more abstract and ethereal works, this piece retains a clear connection to the traditions of nineteenth-century Dutch landscape painting. It reflects a moment of observation where the artist balances the physical reality of the trees and water with a subjective, poetic interpretation of the setting. The work remains a fine example of the technical proficiency and atmospheric sensitivity that defined the early career of this Dutch master.
