A serene maritime scene by Willem Bastiaan Tholen, depicting traditional Dutch fishing boats on a calm, misty day.
Willem Bastiaan Tholen, a prominent member of the second generation of the Hague School, produced this atmospheric study of botters, the traditional flat-bottomed fishing vessels of the Zuiderzee. Painted in 1926, the work captures the quietude of the Dutch waterways, a subject that occupied the artist throughout his career. Tholen possessed a particular sensitivity to the interplay of light and water, often favouring a restrained palette to convey the misty, overcast conditions typical of the Dutch coast.
The composition is defined by its simplicity and the deliberate placement of the boats across the horizon. The hulls and sails of the vessels are rendered with loose, confident brushwork, allowing the form of the ships to emerge from the surrounding haze. The water acts as a mirror, reflecting the muted tones of the sky and creating a sense of depth through subtle gradations of colour. Unlike the more dramatic maritime scenes of earlier centuries, this work focuses on the mundane reality of the fishing fleet, presenting the vessels as silhouettes against the expansive, light-filled atmosphere.
Tholen often worked from his own boat, the Eudia, which allowed him to observe these subjects at close range. This direct engagement with the environment is evident in the authenticity of the scene. The paint application is thin, characteristic of his later period, where he prioritised the capture of fleeting light effects over precise detail. The result is a work that conveys the stillness of the harbour, inviting the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in tone and the quiet rhythm of the maritime environment. This print preserves the tonal nuances of the original oil painting, ensuring the delicate balance between the sky and the water remains clear.
