Description
A monochrome print by Wallerant Vaillant, 'Brief lezende man en vrouw' depicts a man and woman intently reading a letter in a domestic setting, showcasing the artist's skill in capturing intimate moments with subtle light and shadow.
This monochrome print, titled 'Brief lezende man en vrouw' (Man and Woman Reading a Letter), is attributed to Wallerant Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. Vaillant, born in Lille, was known for his portraiture and genre scenes, often rendered with a characteristic softness and attention to detail. He worked in various European cities, including Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin, gaining recognition for his skill in mezzotint. The print depicts a man and a woman seated at a table, engrossed in reading a letter. The man, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, holds the letter while the woman, her head covered with a simple cap, looks on. A pitcher and other objects sit on the table, suggesting a domestic setting. The composition is intimate, drawing the viewer into the private moment of shared communication. The use of light and shadow adds depth to the scene, creating a sense of quiet drama. The print's monochrome palette enhances its timeless quality, typical of the period's printmaking techniques.

He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664.
