A woodcut print by Dutch designer Mathieu Lauweriks, featuring geometric motifs and stylised natural forms characteristic of his early twentieth-century aesthetic.
Mathieu Lauweriks was a Dutch architect, designer, and theorist who occupied a position within the development of early twentieth-century Dutch design. His work often reflects a preoccupation with geometric order and the synthesis of spiritual symbolism with decorative form. This woodcut, titled Broederketen, demonstrates his interest in the structural potential of the print medium.
The composition is defined by a central circular motif containing a cluster of leaves, which are rendered with a focus on symmetry and balance. The surrounding space is populated by stylised heart-shaped forms and star-like symbols, creating a rhythmic arrangement that borders on the abstract. The use of a woodcut technique results in a tactile quality, where the grain of the block and the pressure of the press contribute to the visual texture of the ink on the paper.
Lauweriks was associated with the Theosophical movement, and his designs frequently incorporate motifs that suggest a search for universal harmony. The geometric precision seen here, particularly in the triangular border at the base and the star patterns, aligns with his broader theoretical work on the mathematical foundations of beauty. By reducing natural forms to their essential shapes, he creates a visual language that is both disciplined and expressive. This print offers a clear example of the transition from the organic fluidity of Art Nouveau towards the more structured, grid-based aesthetics that would later characterise the De Stijl movement. The choice of a muted, monochromatic palette ensures that the focus remains on the interplay of line, shape, and negative space, allowing the viewer to appreciate the deliberate construction of the image.
