A modernist depiction of a participant in the traditional Brazilian Bumba-Meu-Boi festival, rendered with expressive line work and a restrained palette.
Candido Portinari, a central figure in Brazilian modernism, frequently turned his attention to the folk traditions and social realities of his home country. This work depicts a participant in the Bumba-Meu-Boi, a traditional Brazilian folk festival that combines music, dance, and theatre. The figure is shown wearing the elaborate costume associated with the performance, which mimics the form of an ox. Portinari employs a distinct graphic style here, utilising textured lines and cross-hatching to define the volume of the costume and the presence of the performer.
The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the costumed figure against a neutral background. A single, circular yellow form represents the sun, providing a minimal environmental context that suggests the outdoor nature of the festival. Portinari's approach to the subject is not merely descriptive: he captures the rhythmic energy of the performance through the repetition of lines within the skirt of the costume and the gestural quality of the drawing. The figure's expression remains enigmatic, reflecting the artist's tendency to imbue his subjects with a sense of quiet dignity.
This print demonstrates Portinari's ability to synthesise European modernist techniques with Brazilian cultural themes. His work often addressed the lives of the rural poor and the cultural heritage of Brazil, moving away from academic realism toward a more expressive, personal visual language. The use of lithography allows for the reproduction of the artist's original drawing style, preserving the immediacy of the mark-making. The palette is restrained, relying on earth tones and the contrast between the dark ink of the figure and the light paper support, which directs the viewer's attention to the structural details of the costume and the posture of the performer.
