A sensitive portrait study in ink and wash by the Dutch artist Moses ter Borch, capturing the weathered features of an elderly man.
This portrait study by Moses ter Borch captures the weathered features of an elderly man with remarkable economy of line. As a member of the notable Ter Borch family of artists, Moses demonstrated a keen ability to observe the human condition, despite his tragically short life. The work employs a monochromatic palette, utilising ink and wash to define the textures of the subject's fur-lined garment and the deep furrows of his brow.
The composition is framed within a simple rectangular border, a common practice in seventeenth-century Dutch drawing practice to isolate the subject for study. The artist focuses on the psychological weight of the sitter, whose direct gaze and slightly downturned mouth suggest a life of experience. The handling of the wash creates subtle gradations of shadow, particularly around the eyes and the folds of the cap, which provide a sense of volume to the face.
Unlike the polished oil paintings of his more famous brother, Gerard ter Borch, this drawing offers a glimpse into the private, preparatory work of a young artist honing his craft. The lines are precise, showing a confident hand that prioritises character over idealisation. The fur collar is rendered with quick, rhythmic strokes that contrast with the smoother, more deliberate application of wash on the face. This piece is a fine example of the Dutch tradition of portraiture, where the focus remains on the individual's presence rather than elaborate settings or allegorical meaning. It is a quiet, contemplative work that invites close inspection of the artist's technical skill and his empathetic approach to his subject.
