A detailed 17th-century engraving by Dominicus Custos, depicting Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, in formal military attire.
This engraving by Dominicus Custos depicts Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, a figure of significant political weight during the French Wars of Religion. Custos, a Flemish printmaker active in Augsburg, was known for his technical precision in portraiture. The work follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century European printmaking, utilising a formal oval frame to contain the subject. The Duke is shown in armour, a common choice for noble portraiture of the period, which communicates his status as a military commander. The cross at the top of the oval and the surrounding Latin inscription provide a sense of authority and historical context. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to model the Duke's features, beard, and the metallic texture of his breastplate. The shading is achieved through cross-hatching, a technique that allows for subtle gradations of tone despite the monochromatic nature of the medium. Below the portrait, a Latin text block offers a eulogistic summary of the subject's character and military career. This print is a characteristic example of the portrait series produced by Custos, which aimed to document the faces of contemporary European nobility for a scholarly and aristocratic audience. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the psychological presence of the sitter. The clarity of the engraving reflects the high standards of the Augsburg workshops during this era, where printmaking served as a primary method for the dissemination of political and historical imagery across the continent. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the early modern period, where the printed portrait functioned as a tool for both personal promotion and historical record-keeping.
