Description
A formal portrait of American philanthropist Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, painted by the French Academic artist Alexandre Cabanel in 1876.
Alexandre Cabanel, a leading figure of the French Academic tradition, painted this portrait of Catharine Lorillard Wolfe in 1876. Wolfe was a prominent American philanthropist and a significant benefactor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Cabanel was highly regarded during the Second Empire for his technical precision and his ability to capture the social standing of his subjects through refined composition. In this work, the sitter is depicted in a three-quarter length pose, leaning against a table draped in a deep green cloth. Her attire, a white satin gown accented with dark fur trim, demonstrates the fashion of the period and allows Cabanel to display his skill in rendering different textures. The background is a muted, dark tone, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject. The lighting is soft and controlled, typical of the studio portraiture favoured by the Parisian elite. Cabanel’s approach to portraiture prioritised clarity and a polished surface finish, avoiding the visible brushwork that would soon become common among the Impressionists. The composition is balanced and formal, reflecting the status of the sitter. The work remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship expected from a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. By focusing on the material quality of the dress and the composed expression of the subject, the artist creates a record of the individual that aligns with the aesthetic values of the late nineteenth-century upper class.
