A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Edelinck, depicting the scholar Charles Gobinet in a formal portrait.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Charles Gobinet, a notable figure associated with the Sorbonne. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the nuances of oil painting into the medium of copperplate engraving. This work is based on a painting by Nicolas de Largillière, a contemporary portraitist known for his command of texture and light.
The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century commemorative prints. Gobinet is shown in clerical attire, his expression captured with a sense of gravity and intellectual focus. Edelinck employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the subject's features and the folds of his robes. The background remains neutral, ensuring the viewer's attention stays on the sitter's face. Below the portrait, a plinth features Latin text, which provides biographical details and honours the subject's academic contributions. The precision of the line work, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the fabric of the collar, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship that defined Edelinck's output during his tenure in the French court.
This print serves as an example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during the late seventeenth century. By reproducing Largillière's original composition, Edelinck allowed the image of Gobinet to circulate more widely among the academic and ecclesiastical circles of the era. The work remains a clear record of both the sitter's appearance and the technical standards of the period's printmaking industry.
