A sombre, atmospheric depiction of Christ and his disciples arriving at the Garden of Gethsemane, rendered in the expressive, psychological style of Nikolai Ge.
Nikolai Ge, a member of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), focused his later career on the psychological and moral dimensions of the New Testament. In this work, he depicts the arrival of Christ and his followers at the Garden of Gethsemane. The composition relies heavily on the contrast between light and shadow, a technique Ge employed to heighten the emotional weight of the scene. The figures are rendered with a sombre, muted palette, reflecting the gravity of the events preceding the Crucifixion.
Unlike the academic painters of his era who prioritised idealised forms, Ge sought a raw, humanised portrayal of biblical figures. The architecture of the stone structure serves as a stark backdrop, grounding the scene in a tangible, physical reality. The light, which appears to emanate from an unseen source, illuminates the figures of Christ and his disciples, creating a sense of isolation and anticipation. The brushwork is loose and expressive, moving away from the polished finish typical of 19th-century Russian art. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the psychological state of the subjects rather than the technical precision of the paint application.
Ge spent his final years in relative seclusion, producing a series of paintings that explored the suffering and humanity of Christ. This piece is representative of that period, where the artist moved towards a more personal, almost existential interpretation of religious themes. The lack of ornate detail forces the eye toward the interaction between the figures and the encroaching darkness of the garden. It is a study in quiet tension, capturing a moment of transition before the narrative reaches its climax. The work remains a clear example of Ge's departure from traditional iconography in favour of a more direct, emotive style.
