A dramatic Baroque depiction of the biblical encounter between Christ and the Samaritan woman, featuring Strozzi's signature use of light and shadow.
Bernardo Strozzi, a prominent figure of the Genoese Baroque, captures a moment of theological exchange in this depiction of Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well. The narrative, drawn from the Gospel of John, focuses on the encounter between Jesus and a woman of Samaria. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of chiaroscuro, where deep shadows contrast with the illuminated figures to focus the viewer on their interaction.
The composition is intimate, stripping away extraneous background detail to concentrate on the psychological tension between the two subjects. The Samaritan woman leans forward, her expression one of curiosity and engagement, while her hand rests upon the large water vessel. Christ, positioned opposite her, gestures with an open hand, suggesting the act of teaching or revelation. Strozzi’s brushwork is fluid and confident, characteristic of his mature style developed during his time in Venice. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the deep red of Christ's robe and the subtle mauve of the woman's shawl, which adds a sense of material weight to the scene.
Strozzi was known for his ability to blend the influence of Caravaggio’s light effects with the painterly traditions of the Venetian school. This work demonstrates his capacity to render human emotion through gesture and facial expression. The focus remains on the immediacy of the conversation, avoiding overly complex staging. The textures of the clothing and the metallic sheen of the water jar are rendered with a tactile quality that brings the figures into the viewer's space. This print captures the atmospheric depth and the specific tonal range of the original oil painting, preserving the interplay of light and shadow that defines Strozzi’s approach to religious narrative.
