A detailed late fifteenth-century engraving by Martin Schongauer, depicting the Man of Sorrows flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John.
Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, produced this engraving during the late fifteenth century. The work depicts the Man of Sorrows, a devotional subject showing Christ after the crucifixion, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The figures are positioned within an arched frame, a common compositional device in Schongauer's prints that suggests a window into a sacred space.
Schongauer demonstrates his technical command through the use of fine, controlled lines to create volume and texture. The drapery of the garments is rendered with precise hatching, which defines the folds and weight of the fabric. The expressions on the faces of the figures convey a sense of quiet grief, typical of the devotional art of the period. Above the central figure, angels are depicted in the upper curve of the arch, adding a celestial dimension to the scene. The artist's monogram, M+S, is visible at the base of the composition, a hallmark of his professional output.
This engraving reflects the shift in European art toward greater naturalism and emotional engagement. By focusing on the human suffering of Christ, the image invites the viewer into a personal, meditative experience. The contrast between the stark, suffering figure of Christ and the mourning figures beside him creates a balanced, harmonious arrangement. The print remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by German printmakers in the late Middle Ages. It provides insight into the visual culture of the time, where such small-scale works were used for private prayer and contemplation. The precision of the line work allows for a level of detail that would have been difficult to achieve in other media, making this a significant example of early printmaking history.
