Heinrich Nüsser, a German engraver, translated Overbeck's linear and austere style into this precise print format. The work captures the moment Christ is forcibly led by guards toward the house of the High Priest.

The composition follows the stylistic tenets of the Nazarene school, which sought to revive the clarity and moral seriousness of early Renaissance art. The figures are arranged with a focus on narrative legibility, using clear outlines and a balanced distribution of weight across the frame. The lighting is theatrical, provided by a lantern held by one of the guards, which casts long shadows and defines the forms of the figures against the architectural backdrop.
