Description

A woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting the Circumcision of Christ. The scene is set within a vaulted interior, lit by a radiant light source above.

This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the Circumcision of Christ, a common subject in Renaissance art. Altdorfer, a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance period, is known for his integration of the Danube school style into his works. He often combined religious and historical subjects with expressive scenery. The scene is set within a vaulted interior, lit by a radiant light source above. A group of figures surrounds the central act of circumcision, their faces etched with concern and solemnity. The composition is characterised by its dense, linear quality, typical of woodcut prints. Altdorfer's skill is evident in the detailed rendering of the figures' robes and the architectural setting, all achieved through the stark contrast of black lines on a white background. The print exemplifies the artist's ability to convey depth and emotion within the limitations of the woodcut medium.

Albrecht Altdorfer portrait

Artist Biography

Albrecht Altdorfer

Altdorfer was elected mayor of Regensburg in 1528 but turned the position down to finish a painting. The painting was The Battle of Alexander at Issus, commissioned by Duke William IV of Bavaria: a vast panoramic canvas showing Alexander's victory over Darius III, with thousands of tiny soldiers beneath a cosmic sky. It is one of the first history paintings to treat landscape as the dominant element.

He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
