During this time, Diebenkorn lived in the Ocean Park neighbourhood of Santa Monica, and his work began to reflect the specific light and geometry of the Californian environment. This painting captures a view that is both recognisable and abstracted, focusing on the structural interplay between urban architecture and the surrounding terrain.
The composition is defined by strong, angular lines and a deliberate flattening of space. Diebenkorn uses broad, visible brushstrokes to construct the scene, prioritising the weight of the paint and the relationship between colour fields over precise detail. The palette consists of earthy tones, muted greens, and sharp greys, which mirror the dry, sun-drenched quality of the West Coast. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe the division between the built environment on the left and the open, undeveloped land on the right.
