A study of the Normandy coastline by Claude Monet, capturing the chalk cliffs of Petit Ailly through soft, atmospheric brushwork and a muted colour palette.
Claude Monet painted this study of the Normandy coast during his stay in Varengeville-sur-Mer in 1897. The work captures the chalk cliffs near Petit Ailly, a subject that occupied the artist during several visits to the region. Monet focused on the atmospheric conditions of the coast, prioritising the play of light over the physical structure of the rock face.
The composition is dominated by the massive, vertical form of the cliff, which occupies the majority of the frame. Monet used a palette of soft lilacs, pale blues, and muted greens to render the texture of the chalk and the sparse vegetation clinging to its surface. The sea, visible to the right, is reduced to a hazy, indistinct expanse, suggesting a misty or overcast day. This treatment of the sea minimises the horizon line, pushing the viewer to engage directly with the tactile quality of the cliff face.
Monet applied the paint in short, broken strokes, a technique that allows the colours to blend optically when viewed from a distance. This method avoids hard outlines, creating a sense of movement and instability in the rock. The light appears diffused, lacking the sharp shadows of a clear day, which contributes to the quiet, meditative quality of the work. By isolating this section of the coastline, Monet transformed a geological feature into a study of colour and light. The painting reflects his interest in serial work, where the same subject is revisited under varying conditions to explore the limits of visual perception. This print reproduces the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, maintaining the delicate balance of the cool and warm hues present in the cliff face.
