Description
A dramatic depiction of the Greek queen Clytemnestra, standing with a blood-stained axe after the murder of Agamemnon, painted by John Collier in 1882.
John Collier, a prominent British painter of the late Victorian era, completed this work in 1882. It depicts the Greek mythological figure Clytemnestra immediately following the murder of her husband, King Agamemnon. The composition focuses on the queen as she stands in a doorway, holding a blood-stained double-headed axe. Her expression is one of cold resolve rather than remorse. Collier employs a theatrical approach to the subject, utilising strong chiaroscuro to define the figure against the dark, heavy architecture of the palace. The drapery of her white gown, which catches the light, contrasts with the deep shadows of the interior. The artist pays close attention to the texture of the fabric and the metallic sheen of the axe, demonstrating his technical proficiency in academic realism. The inclusion of the patterned curtain on the right adds a decorative element that balances the verticality of the axe handle and the door frame. This painting reflects the Victorian interest in classical themes and the dramatic potential of Greek tragedy. Collier was known for his ability to capture psychological tension within a narrative scene. By choosing the moment after the act, he forces the viewer to confront the aftermath of the violence. The work is currently held in the collection of the Guildhall Art Gallery in London. It remains a clear example of the late nineteenth-century fascination with historical and mythological subjects, rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy and narrative clarity.
