A 1958 modernist painting by Candido Portinari depicting the physical labour of the coffee harvest with expressive brushwork and angular figures.
Candido Portinari, a central figure in twentieth-century Brazilian art, produced this work in 1958. The composition captures the labour-intensive nature of the coffee harvest, a subject that occupied the artist throughout his career. Portinari often drew upon his own childhood experiences on coffee plantations in the state of São Paulo to inform his visual narratives.
The painting employs a flattened perspective, which allows for the arrangement of multiple figures across the canvas. Workers are depicted in various stages of the harvest: some are positioned on ladders, others are bent over the earth, and a central figure stands upright, holding a vessel filled with coffee beans. The figures possess elongated, angular limbs, a stylistic choice that emphasises the physical strain of their work. The colour palette is dominated by deep greens, earthy browns, and patches of bright, saturated red, which create a sense of movement and energy across the scene.
Unlike traditional depictions of agricultural life, this work avoids romanticised imagery. Instead, it focuses on the repetitive, demanding motions of the labourers. The brushwork is expressive and textured, adding a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas. By placing the figures against a dense, dark background, Portinari draws the viewer's attention to the human element of the production process. This piece offers a direct observation of the social and economic realities of rural Brazil during the mid-twentieth century, presented through the artist's distinct modernist lens.
