A nineteenth-century albumen silver print by Francis Frith, documenting the ancient Egyptian temple ruins at Soleb.
This albumen silver print captures the remnants of the temple of Soleb, located in modern-day Sudan. Francis Frith, a prominent British photographer, undertook three expeditions to Egypt and the Near East between 1856 and 1860. His work provided the Victorian public with their first detailed visual records of these ancient sites. The image displays the towering, weathered columns of the temple, which was constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III.
Frith utilised the wet collodion process, a method requiring the photographer to prepare, expose, and develop glass plates on-site. This technical demand was significant given the harsh desert conditions. The composition includes a solitary figure seated near the base of the ruins, a common device in nineteenth-century travel photography to provide a sense of scale against the monumental architecture. The surrounding terrain is arid and strewn with stone fragments, reflecting the state of the site during the mid-nineteenth century.
Frith's documentation of Soleb remains a primary source for understanding the physical condition of the temple before later archaeological interventions. The print exhibits the characteristic sepia tones associated with the albumen process, a result of the paper being coated with egg white and sensitised with silver nitrate. The clarity of the architectural details, from the fluting of the columns to the erosion of the sandstone blocks, demonstrates Frith's technical precision. This photograph is part of a broader collection of his travels, which were published in various formats, including large-scale folios that brought the geography of the Nile valley to a global audience. The image serves as a record of both the ancient structure and the photographic practices of the era.
