A detailed realist depiction of passengers on the deck of the SS Lusitania during a voyage to Australia in 1886.
Coming South, painted in 1886, captures the atmosphere aboard the SS Lusitania during its voyage from England to Australia. Tom Roberts, a key figure in the development of Australian art, produced this work shortly after his return to Melbourne from Europe. The painting documents the diverse social classes and experiences of passengers travelling to a new life in the colonies.
The composition is dominated by the ship's deck machinery, including the large ventilator funnel that occupies the centre of the frame. This industrial element acts as a physical barrier between the various groups of passengers. To the left, a woman in mourning attire sits with a child, while a man rests on a crate nearby. To the right, a woman in a straw hat and light-coloured dress engages in conversation, representing a different social stratum. The deck is crowded with figures, each occupied with their own activities, from reading to socialising. Roberts uses a muted palette of greys, browns, and soft pinks to convey the overcast light of the sea voyage.
Roberts was influenced by the plein air techniques he observed in Europe, particularly in France. He applied these methods to the Australian context, focusing on the observation of light and social reality. The painting provides a detailed record of late nineteenth-century maritime travel, reflecting the physical conditions of the journey. The ship's rigging and the complex arrangement of the deck equipment demonstrate his technical skill in handling perspective and spatial depth. This work remains a primary example of his ability to synthesise European artistic training with the specific social narratives of his time.
