A refined seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the painter Cornelis de Vos, executed by Lucas Vorsterman I after an original design by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait of the Flemish painter Cornelis de Vos is a fine example of the printmaking skill of Lucas Vorsterman I. The work forms part of the Iconography, a series of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Vorsterman, a highly capable engraver, worked closely with Van Dyck to translate the painterly qualities of the original oil portraits into the precise medium of copperplate engraving.
The composition presents De Vos in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed towards the viewer with a sense of calm authority. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the texture of the subject's clothing and the subtle modelling of his facial features. The light source, coming from the upper left, creates a gentle contrast that gives the figure a sense of physical presence against the horizontally lined background. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, identifying the sitter as a painter from Antwerp, follows the conventions of seventeenth-century print portraiture.
Vorsterman's technique is characterised by a disciplined use of line. He manages to convey the soft quality of the fabric and the individual strands of the sitter's moustache and beard through controlled, rhythmic strokes. The print demonstrates the technical rigour required to capture the likeness of a fellow artist while maintaining the stylistic unity of the larger Iconography project. This piece offers a clear view into the collaborative nature of the Antwerp art scene during the seventeenth century, where painters and printmakers worked in tandem to document the figures of their era.
